On the outskirts of the town sits the old quarter on an overhang balcony that has the most breathtaking view point down to the Mediterranean. Built within ancient Arab walls of a fifteenth century castle this was declared a heritage site of cultural interest. You can stroll through the pretty botanical gardens within. This is just one of various well preserved historical sites of interest within Mijas. Many of which are distinctly Moorish in Style. La Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña de Mijas is also worth a visit. It is a beautiful chapel carved into the rock during the seventeenth century by Carmelite monks and today caters for visitors. A small oval shaped bullring sits towards the top of the pueblo, accompanied by an auditorium which hosts various music concerts,  plus the Church of Immaculate Conception. With an assortment of other attractions such as the Carromato de Mijas (collection of miniatures) and a chocolate factory, there really is something to keep everybody amused.

The main square has now been pedestrianised and is the centre point of the many festival celebrated by the locals from halloween, beer festivals, concerts, 3 kings procession, carnival and many more. Mijas municipality celebrates deep-rooted traditions but has also opened its doors to the more modern celebrations, always with a unique close community feel.

The well equipped Town hall sits prominently in the centre of the Pueblo and has proven to have a very competent and helpful foreigners department catering for residents and tourists. Street parking in Mijas is very difficult, however there is a large multi-storey carpark which is operates 24 hours a day and has a standard payment of 1€ a day. There are also frequent bus services to and from neighbouring towns, Fuengirola, Benalmádena and in land to Alháurin and Coin.

One of the biggest attractions over the years has been the charming donkey-taxis, which offer trips around the centre and the outskirts of the village. This tradition started back in the 50´s and turned into a business following the interest the tourists were taking in the local workers riding home on the donkey’s. However in recent years there has been a lot speculation and disapproval about the treatment of the Donkey’s with many an increasing effort to discourage people from hiring them.

There is a public infant & primary school accompanied by various nurseries, students in higher education however, would need to travel outside of the village. Mijas has many amenities and those it lacks are only a short drive away.

Despite its huge popularity Mijas Village retains its laid back relaxing atmosphere and a walk around feels like stepping back in time.

The majority of the properties within the old town of Mijas Pueblo are of the traditional style, older buildings with small windows, comprising of numerous quirky, intimate rooms. As you move away from old town centre you find newer apartments and stunning villas of varying style and size. Many taking full advantage of the stunning Mediterranean views from the higher viewpoint.
